This is the book that opened my eyes to economic thinking.  Hazlitt shows that bad economics looks only at the immediate outcome for specific sectors of society.  Good economics looks at the long run effects on society as a whole.  If you're at all familiar with Frederic Bastiat (a French economist of the mid-1800s), this is essentially an update of his "What is Seen and What is Not Seen" for the mid-twentieth century.  I knew absolutely nothing of economics before I read this book.  Now I'm more passionate about economics than about almost anything else.  Very highly recommended.
